Godine 1963.

  2. Jura 1991, 29 godina, 42%, Lady of the Glen, WB171123 - izraženija zelena crta (trava, livada) više nego u prvom uzorku, breskve, čajevac, dosta uljan, med, orahovac, čaj od tropskog voća, sušeni ananas – sve skupa jako lijepo iako na 42%.

  3. Jura 1991, 16 godina, 46%, Murray Mcdavid, WB9061 - pokisli kompost, čaj, lješnjaci i orasi, repelent za komarce, gljive, efekt stare boce – jako čudan viski.

Tasting of the Distillery Isle of Jura

The Jura Distillery is located on the namesake island of Jura, on the west coast of Scotland, founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell. The distillery underwent several name changes: Craighouse, Small Isles, Caol nan Eilean, Jura, and had various owners without significant fame until 1901 when it closed along with many distilleries during the first major whisky sales slump. High operating costs on the island and the lack of direct transport to the mainland were major issues. In 1963, Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith decided to restart whisky production to stop the further decline in the island's population at the same location where the distillery previously stood.

Sales as a single malt started in 1974, and the range has gradually expanded since. Inside, Jura has stainless steel washbacks and very tall stills, with a capacity of over 20,000 liters. (at one time, it was mentioned that Glenmorangie and Jura had the tallest stills)

According to many experts, Jura distilled in the late 80s and early 90s is considered the best, along with perhaps the most expensive and most esteemed bottle of Jura Samaroli 1966. Apparently, due to relatively short fermentation, the whisky needs more years to develop its best (or more active casks).

Many whisky enthusiasts are not fond of Jura, jokingly referring to it as the worst whisky, but the fact is that in the last three years, Jura has been one of the best-selling single malt whiskies in the United Kingdom, ranked 5th.

We tasted the following:

  1. Jura 1992, 29 years, 44.7%, The single cask, WB194578 - honey, meadow, mown grass, vanilla, pear, citrus, milky, old wood, banana, coconut. On the palate, it lacks body even though it has 44.7%, syrupy, balanced.

  2. Jura 1991, 29 years, 42%, Lady of the Glen, WB171123 - a more pronounced green, herbal notes (grass, meadow) than in the first sample, peaches, tea tree, quite oily, honey, walnut liqueur, tropical fruit tea, dried pineapple – all together very nice although at 42%.

  3. Jura 1991, 16 years, 46%, Murray Mcdavid, WB9061 - soured compost, tea, hazelnuts and walnuts, mosquito repellent, mushrooms, old bottle effect – a very strange whisky.

  4. Jura 1990, 30 years, 46.4%, Thompson brothers, WB171874 - nicely mellow, complex, floral, lots of fruit, very oily, tropical, the wood is not felt after so many years in the cask – a beautiful whisky!

  5. Jura 1989, 16 years, 58.4%, Scott's selection, WB10601 - milky, woody, citrus, burnt vanilla, charr (gives a smoky feel), hazelnuts, oil, old bottle effect, nice whisky but does not stand out in this tasting.

  6. Jura 1989, 24 years, 58.8%, Signatory Vintage – Limburg 2014, WB55106 - the only peated one in this tasting, although there is very small amount of peat. Dirtiness, fruity, ashtray, oily, vanilla, herbal, apricots, burnt tires, nail polish. very nice whisky for those who like dirtier whiskies. All in all, it was an excellent tasting! A common feature of all the whiskies was that they were quite oily and had a herbal note, which was more pronounced in some and less in others. The most standout were Thompson brothers, Lady of the Glen, and Signatory, while Murray McDavid fared the worst. Through these examples, we saw that Jura really needs a long series of years to shine, everything older than 29 years was excellent, while below 20 years was average or poor. Now the question arises, is it worth spending so much money on a 29-year-old Jura when you can get an equally good, if not better, younger whisky for less money.
